Crackers, Snacks and Other GF Treats

I wanted to check in with others who eat wheat free and see what some of you like. I do a lot of my own baking but others who eat GF take a slightly different path. They buy most of their GF breads, crackers, cookies, cakes, muffins, etc. So I thought I would share a couple of favorites of mine and see what you all like to buy for snacks.   Image

My new favorite snack is Snyders of Hanover’s Mini Pretzels, they are also dairy and egg free. Somehow Snyders is able to make a small but mighty pretzel that reminds me strongly of their wheat/gluten pretzels. I was really pleased as my
first pretzel purchase of some “twig” pretzels found them to be rather odd and uneven in flavor. Some were yummy and some just this side of inedible! But these mini pretzels are quite tasty so check them out. Giant carries them in the GF aisle.

Another tasty treat are Van’s “Lots of Everything” crispy baked crackers. I got them at Frys Better Foods and they are awesome if tiny! Full of flavor and crunch they will hold their own against any wheaty cracker you can buy! They were great with some extra sharp cheese…or maybe as a snack for kids in the car or at gatherings like a church service.

A few weeks ago I bought some Glutino Cheddar flavor GF Crackers. They are round and look quite like a Ritz. The flavor is mostly of cheese and the texture is rather tough compared to the tender flaky buttery delight of a Ritz. Okay with something on it but not that great alone. I will continue to search for my Ritz replacement.

So what do you buy to snack on? GF of course? Share, please do, so I can try more things without as much trepidation. To know that someone finds something tasty is really a big help when snacks cost far more than what one is used to paying. I look forward to your suggestions with much anticipation!

It’s great to see your suggestions! I bake a lot of my own cookies, bread, etc, because I’m allergic to tapioca, which is in a lot of pre-made GF products. However, I quite enjoy the Betty Crocker GF mixes when I want something quick 🙂 Thanks for the post!

I made a cake today using a Betty Crocker yellow cake mix. It only makes 1 layer! Flavor good but that will make a two layer cake very pricey to construct.

Thanks for the follow up! I’ve only made cupcakes so far, but I agree that would be quite expensive. How did it hold up as a cake? I always struggle when I try to make larger items, such as a bread loaf or a whole sheet of brownies.

I baked it in a 8×8 pan and served it out of the pan; was a fake tiramisu; had holes poked in it with chopsticks and warm coffee syrup poured in and the cake was topped with mixture of vanilla yogurt, cream cheese and powdered sugar. It seemed fairly firm with a fine texture. Almost like pound cake. I have never baked anything larger than a 9 inch round cake layer. I have used the King Arthur box cake mixes too; makes a full cake and is pretty tasty. It costs a bit more than this BC one I used today but you get a lot more cake. I have made cakes from scratch; not that hard; use Annalise Robert’s GF Baking Classics recipes. Excellent results. Her angelfood cake is very good.

I’ll have to look up Annalise Robert’s GF Baking Classics. I can’t have King Arthur (because of the tapioca starch- tapioca is my pesky allergy). But, it’s easy to modify tapioca out of recipes! I’m probably going to try out a few cakes for my birthday next month. I’ll add the angel food cake to my list and I’ll let you know how it goes!

So, what do you sub in for tapicoa? Just curious. I have made her (Annalise Roberts) yellow cake also as cupcakes; no one ever guessed they were gf. And her chocolate layer cake is great but don’t make it in an 8 inch round pan; overflows; use a 9 inch pan. It has a good texture and great flavor.

Perfect! Thanks for all the tips. I’m going to have a great birthday cake come May 🙂 And, usually arrowroot starch (in the same proportion and everything).
